Little Ruby Bridges, walking to and from school while escorted by police, is an iconic image in our country's history. This work is created in acrylic overtop a background of printed cotton fabric. The image of the officer accompanying Ruby fades into the background, because she should be the focal point of this moment. Using fabric as the background speaks to the way that this moment is woven into our collective human story. The delicate pink pattern reflects traditional thinking about the innocence of young girls, but the density of the pattern interacting with the focal subject matter simultaneously creates a visual tension that echoes the social tension embedded in this moment.
