On the evening of April 18, 2025 in the Annapolis Historic District, the Annapolis 250 Commission, MD Two Fifty and Chesapeake Crossroads Heritage Area commemorated Paul Revere’s 1775 ride to alert New Englanders that British troops were marching to confiscate American rebel arms. The following day the battles at Lexington and Concord sparked the American Revolution.
The Annapolis event recreating the ride attracted re-enactors playing British redcoats, American patriots and Revere himself to build excitement for the 250th Anniversary of our nation’s founding. While true to the Spirit of 76, the event reflected myriad changes-from technological to sociological-that have occurred in U.S. society since the Revolution.
In this portrait, one of the redcoats (all of them at the event were women) is caught in a moment of reflection. Her gender is not the only anachronism in the image, however. Cars in the background betray the epoch as does a small detail of the re-enactor’s accoutrements
