I lived in West Baltimore for three years, and it still haunts me long after I've moved on to a safer space. I visit it sometimes for work-related reasons. After all, that's where many crimes happen. Recently, I made this collage about Baltimore's food deserts. I'm most familiar with the ones in West Baltimore, but they're everywhere. This collage depicts a concrete desert. It includes vacant houses in West Baltimore with a lone corner store in the distance. Like many deserts, the concrete desert can be beautiful but difficult to survive. So, I added some elephants that would normally roam the African desert. I made them scavenge for food among the discarded appliances, which are a norm in West Baltimore's alleyways. A few of them are carrying off junk food snacks. After all, that's pretty much what's available at the corner stores in the food desert.
